Breast Augmentation: Everything You Need to Know Before Surgery
Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures worldwide. At the Figura clinic, plastic surgeon Dr Khaus performs all types of breast surgery with an individualized approach to every patient. In this guide, we answer the most commonly asked questions.
Types of Breast Surgery
The term "mammoplasty" encompasses several different procedures:
- Augmentation mammoplasty — breast enlargement using implants. Suitable for women who wish to add volume and improve shape.
- Reduction mammoplasty — breast reduction. Indicated for excessively large breasts causing back pain, posture problems, and discomfort.
- Mastopexy (breast lift) — correction of ptosis (sagging) without changing size, or with slight augmentation. Often combined with implants.
During the consultation, Dr Khaus will determine which type of surgery is optimal for You, based on Your anatomy, goals, and lifestyle.
Choosing Implants: Brands, Shapes, and Textures
Implant quality is a critically important factor for both safety and aesthetic outcomes. At the Figura clinic, we work exclusively with premium brands that offer lifetime warranties:
- Motiva (Costa Rica) — innovative implants featuring SmoothSilk/SilkSurface technology, with minimal risk of capsular contracture. The Ergonomix line adapts to body position.
- Mentor (USA, Johnson & Johnson) — one of the most recognized brands with decades of history. High-density cohesive silicone gel.
- Polytech (Germany) — European quality with a wide selection of shapes and sizes. Textured surfaces for stable fixation.
Implants come in two main shapes:
- Round — add volume evenly, creating a full appearance in the upper pole
- Anatomical (teardrop) — mimic the natural breast shape with more volume in the lower portion
Dr Khaus will help You choose the optimal size, shape, and brand based on Your body frame, chest width, skin elasticity, and desired outcome.
Implant Placement Methods
Several incision approaches are available for implant placement, each with its own advantages:
- Submammary (under the breast fold) — the most common method. Gives the surgeon maximum control, and the scar is hidden in the natural crease. Recommended in most cases.
- Periareolar (around the areola edge) — incision around the lower portion of the areola. The scar is camouflaged by the skin color contrast. Suitable for simultaneous areola size correction.
- Axillary (through the armpit) — incision in the armpit area, leaving no scars on the breast. Suitable for round implant placement.
The implant can be placed under the gland, under the fascia, or under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular). Dr Khaus selects the method individually, considering tissue thickness and the desired result.
Recovery After Breast Augmentation: Week by Week
Understanding the stages of recovery will help You plan Your schedule:
- Days 1–3: Moderate pain, swelling. Wearing a compression garment. Limited arm movements. Light movement around the house.
- Week 1: First follow-up with the surgeon. Pain decreases, light household tasks are possible. No lifting over 2 kg.
- Weeks 2–3: Return to office work. Swelling gradually subsides. Suture removal (if not dissolvable).
- Weeks 4–6: Light physical activity can resume. The implant begins to "settle" into its natural position.
- Months 3–6: Final result takes shape. Scars lighten. Full exercise routines can resume.
When to Consider Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation may be the right decision if You:
- Feel discomfort due to small breast size or asymmetry
- Have noticed shape changes after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
- Want to restore body proportions
- Have realistic expectations about the outcome
- Are in good overall health
Realistic Expectations and Results
Modern plastic surgery allows for remarkably natural-looking results. However, it is important to understand that perfect symmetry is impossible — slight asymmetry is normal even in natural breasts. Dr Khaus always honestly discusses what results can be expected in each individual case.
