Preparing for Plastic Surgery: A Step-by-Step Plan

Proper preparation for plastic surgery is half the battle. Plastic surgeon Dr Khaus and the Figura clinic in Odesa have prepared this comprehensive guide to help You navigate this journey with confidence and safety.

Consultation and Planning

The first and most important step is a consultation with Your surgeon. During the appointment, Dr Khaus thoroughly discusses Your goals, evaluates Your anatomical features, and creates an individualized surgical plan. Do not hesitate to ask questions — the more You know, the calmer You will feel.

During the consultation, make sure to tell Your doctor about:

  • All chronic conditions and previous surgeries
  • Medications You take regularly
  • Allergic reactions to medications or anesthesia
  • Hereditary conditions in Your family

Medical Examinations and Tests

Before any plastic surgery procedure, a comprehensive set of examinations is required. The standard list includes:

  • Complete blood count and biochemistry panel
  • Coagulogram (blood clotting analysis)
  • HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis screening
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Chest X-ray
  • Anesthesiologist consultation

Depending on the type of surgery and Your health status, the surgeon may order additional tests. At the Figura clinic, we provide the complete list of required tests immediately after the consultation.

Medications to Discontinue

Two to three weeks before surgery, You must stop taking medications that affect blood clotting:

  • Aspirin and aspirin-based medications
  • Ibuprofen, diclofenac, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Anticoagulants (warfarin, heparin) — only in consultation with the prescribing physician
  • Vitamin E in high doses
  • Dietary supplements containing ginkgo biloba, garlic, or ginseng

Be sure to inform Your surgeon about all medications and supplements, even those that seem harmless. Dr Khaus will create an individualized medication adjustment plan for You.

Quitting Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking is one of the most serious risk factors in plastic surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, impairs tissue blood supply, and significantly slows wound healing. We recommend stopping smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery and abstaining for 4 weeks after.

Alcohol should also be eliminated 2 weeks before the procedure. It affects blood clotting, interacts with anesthesia, and can cause swelling.

Preparing Your Home for Recovery

A comfortable recovery environment is something worth arranging in advance. Here is what Dr Khaus recommends:

  • Set up a comfortable resting area with extra pillows for an elevated position
  • Stock up on light meals and beverages for the first 3–5 days
  • Place essentials (medications, water, phone, remote) within arm's reach
  • Arrange for family or friends to help during the first 1–2 days after surgery
  • Prepare loose clothing that is easy to put on (button-up or zip-front)
  • Make arrangements for childcare and pet care

Mental Preparation and Realistic Expectations

Plastic surgery is a significant step, and Your emotional state matters just as much as Your physical condition. It is important to have realistic expectations about the outcome. During the consultation at the Figura clinic, we discuss in detail what can be achieved and what falls beyond the capabilities of surgery.

Pre-surgery anxiety is completely normal. If You feel strong anxiety, do not hesitate to discuss it with Your doctor. Confidence in Your surgeon and understanding the process are the best remedies for worry.

Choosing the Right Time for Surgery

Plan Your surgery with the following factors in mind:

  • Allow sufficient recovery time (1 to 3 weeks depending on the type of procedure)
  • Avoid scheduling surgery before important events
  • Cooler months can be more convenient — it is easier to conceal compression garments and avoid sun exposure
  • Make sure You are not ill and have no flare-ups of chronic conditions

The Figura clinic team and Dr Khaus are always available to answer any questions about preparation. Remember: the better You prepare, the faster and more comfortable Your recovery will be.
